Raising the Spine Surgery Standard – Worldwide

Dr. Anand Blog Article

December 28th, 2017

During this time of year when our world places a stronger focus on giving to those less fortunate than ourselves, I would be remiss if I didn’t highlight a cause near and dear to my heart: The Foundation for Research and Education in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (FREMISS).

Throughout the course of my travels around the world – teaching and performing life-saving spine surgery techniques in countries that otherwise have no access to these advanced modalities – I can tell you firsthand just how lucky we are to live in a country that has access to the minimally invasive surgical treatment options we do for a wide variety of spinal conditions and injuries. My goal is to bring the same access to care, safety and training to as many countries across the globe as possible. This is why I developed FREMISS.

Raising the Spine Surgery Standard

The FREMISS mission is simple: help improve the health of patients with spinal disorders by advancing the highest quality minimally invasive spine care. This organization provides a world-wide forum for the exchange of ideas, clinical expertise and goodwill that fosters continuous education, outcome-based research and surgical care.

Achieving this mission isn’t easy, but it is so worth it. To see patients in other countries learn to walk again after crippling spine pain and deformity is a driving force for me in undertaking this endeavor. Sadly, these stories are still the exception to the rule in many countries and through FREMISS, I endeavor to change that for the better through embracing the tenets of our altruistic and charitable objectives:

  1. Establish a minimally invasive spine surgery fellowship program that educates and trains spine surgeons to perform safe and efficacious minimally invasive spine surgery procedures.
  2. Through research, provide unbiased, outcome-based information relevant to minimally invasive spine surgery for all healthcare providers and the public at large.
  3. Provide global surgical aid to underprivileged patients in countries where advanced spinal procedures are not yet available.

Though this may seem like a large undertaking, we are well on our way. And with your support, we can expand our research, strengthen our programs and improve the future of spinal care to patients all over the world. At this time of year when our worlds become smaller and our hands are more open to giving, I encourage you to consider FREMISS as one of your year-end donation destinations. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
